Racing with Pancakes

To begin the ritual fasting of Lent, pancakes are made in order to consume the households' eggs, butter, sugar and lard.  Story has it that an UK housewife was so busy making these pancakes that she forgot what time it was.  When the bells rang for church services, she, not wanting to waste a morsel, burst frantically out of her house holding the pan and ran to church while flipping the cake. And the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Race was born.

Who knew?

Kristen Monahan did.  Alas, I could not find any mention of such races anywhere in Norwich.

Except.

Except on Twitter.

Pancake day means its the Chorister's Pancake Race 3.30 this afternoon. Anyone can enter. It's going to be fliptastic.

The modern day pancake race involves racing in choir robes to memorialize the housewife.

There was a certain amount of negotiating over just who was going to don that purple gown.

I'm not putting one of those on.

Then it was announced that all racers got a prize. The chef doled out the cakes.

Really? This is the prize?

The bullhorn was sufficiently charged to announce the start.

There was controversy, of course.  Did the winner flip the required number of times?
When a parent got involved, it was time for me to leave.

On-  flipin' tastic  -wards.
