Pub Walk #13

Pub Walks in Norfolk: we have the book and are now commencing the walks.  Today was #13: Horsey and the Nelson Head.
Only in England...

A and E start down the lane
We passed sheep.

Passing sheep in this manner makes one understand the success of sheep dogs.

Instructions are to "pass through the reinforced gap..."

and whoa, there is the North Sea.

No wind, no waves and very few people.  Cold water, being north Atlantic and all.

After walking along the beach for a bit, we turned back inland through the marshes. The remains of a windmill is ahead.

Texting in the marsh on her new burner.

Contrails fill the sky, we think from N European planes flying to the USA.
The Horsey Mill
This mill was built during the Victorian Era to drain the surrounding lands, so it's technically a windpump, not a mill.  It stopped working in 1943 when it was struck by lightning, and, due to the war, there was not enough timber available to repair it.
It has since been refurbished, and is now managed by the National Trust.  We went inside.

The mill used the wind energy to pump water up about 7 feet.  This small rise in elevation was enough to drain the fields and, when the tides and sea levels were right, allow the water to flow out to sea.  It was replaced by a steam pump, then a diesel, one, and now an electric one.  We climbed to the top of the mill.

Alice is in this picture.
I have a lovely Horsey Mill tea towel for the first person who successfully comments on this blog post.  We need comments!

To comment:
Click on the comments link at the bottom of the post.  A box will appear.
Type your comment.   To reduce spamming, you must post as someone so chose a profile in the drop-down box on the right and anonymous is OK (though harder to get a tea towel.)
Hit submit.
You will also need to fill in the letters as you see them, another anti-spamming device.

You cannot comment by replying to the post email.
You cannot comment without doing so as someone and anonymous is OK.

You all can do this.  Eric, Alice and I thank you.

As promised, the Nelson Head pub was at the end of our walk.  Admiral Nelson was born in Great Yarmouth, a few miles away.  After pub grub in the garden, we headed back to Naarrch.

Onwards!

Never imagined a pub walk through the fields and beach!!??
Sometime soon you might need to post something other than moonlit evenings on your patio, rock on parties with 75 of your closest friends, views worth hiking for, etc. because, why would you return to Durham!!
Seriously - thanks and miss you guys! Appreciate living vicariously...

Hi, Gerty,

Thx for posting instructions re how to post a comment; have tried before but have not been successful. (and, yes, I even tried just replying...) I love your blog and want to encourage all three of you in every way possible. The pics are great, as is the commentary. Did you get my reply re the W and K tea-towel, by the way? I at least tried...

My ever-supporting father wins the Horsey towel. Perhaps the mill has not been restarted because the blades are now really heavy due to having been faithfully repainted every other year with lead paint. Also someone has to be at the mill during periods of high and changing winds because if a strong wind suddenly changes direction, the machinery will break. The quarters in side the mill are very small and there is no wifi.

Jean, the ADLs, the activities of daily living, do deserve a post you are so right. Then you too can marvel in grocery delivery, the fish monger who ties up all his fish to look like tiny aliens, driving, the 2.5 hr dishwasher cycle, the punching bus driver....all coming soon!
